Comments from Anthony / Dmann Tuning who performed testing:
"Okay, for initial testing of the JDMuscle prototype we used a FBO 22 WRX on E50. The vehicle was loaded with our “standard” E50 ProTunes. The vehicle had an ETS Intake, GESi J-Pipe, ETS FMIC and a Cobb catback before installation of the header and with no other changes. No kill maps were use and this tune we used is something we would generally have as a completed tune on a customer vehicle for sake of comparison to apples to apples. The vehicle made 407/436 at the tire twice on both baseline runs. After the addition of the JDMuscle UEL header; the car produced 417/413 at the wheels. (You can see below in the pull data it was done the same day within 3 hours apart with similar weather conditions) The obvious and expected loss of low-end moving from an EL/twin scroll to a single scroll/UEL design was actually less than anticipated. I will comment on the fact the vehicle did make more power up top with no tune changes as a result of the larger manifold sizing.
After some simple tuning modifications mainly to the WG initial table to smooth back out the boost onset and attempt to bring it in sooner and adding another .5psi down low (no timing changes) netted a whopping 418/468 at the tire and mitigated the low end loss to a minimum. To be fair, with the stock manifold, the tq increase if the same tune was placed on the car would total net about the same. Concentrate more on whp above the curve and mitigation of the low-end loss. As we all know, there will always be a loss from going from a twin-scroll EL, to a single UEL. This fact is irrefutable. However, the 2.4s extra displacement and redesigned turbo (E-WG) loses are much less than the “expected loss” when compared to a FA20 with a Tomei UEL for example. Also note, the chart looks exaggerated due to the nature of the auto-scaling.
Dmann’s take: If you’re a UEL fan and you’re going to do it regardless; well, at least this one makes a touch more power. Furthermore, with some additional clever tuning, the TQ loss can almost be completely mitigated to the point of “almost” being negligible. To be honest, I can not tell a discernible difference with transient boost affects when driving the vehicle on the road and can feel a positive power increase overall.
Disclaimer: The negative effects of going UEL are still unknown since the last gen. /DMann Tuning"
